This weekend is one of the most anticipated since the New Years, three days for businessmen (and women) to sit back and relax, throw a few snags on the barbie and compete in a hell serious game of backyard cricket. And if your not Australian and haven't figured it out already today is Australia Day!! For the last 206 years celebrations have taken place on the 26th of January commemorating the landing of the Captain Cook and the colonisation of 'white people' on Australian soil. As far as I am aware this celebration has been under scrutiny by many Aboriginal activists as it also marks the day the white people took over their homes and began the ordeal that has still not healed. I can clearly understand the point these people are making, but believe that although it was a cruel day in our history, it is still one of the most important.
So to celebrate Australia Day most local areas hold a parade, fun day or Australia related races/competitions. Our local radio station along with McDonald's organised a massive fireworks display along with 6 hours of live music, free rides, stalls and plenty of show style food. The rain had pretty much held off for the afternoon with only a few light showers that only phased a few until the fireworks started. The first pop must have bumped one of the rain clouds because as soon as the red firework saturated the sky, the rain saturated us. Now I swear it hadn't rained this hard in months I was drenched before the second firework even erupted. But the display was still amazing, I will post some photos of the afternoon/night below :)
